Fixed Cameras Reading License Plates Come To Salina – Salina Journal | Episode Movies

Nearly two dozen cameras with the ability to scan license plates will soon be installed across the city after the Salina City Commission approved a police department request.

The commission’s unanimous decision means the city will enter into a three-year deal with Flock Safety to install and lease 22 fixed automatic number plate readers (ALPR).

Sean Morton, acting chief of the Salina Police Department, said ALPRs, which can alert law enforcement to interesting vehicles, are not new technology for the department, which bought two mobile readers in 2015.

“Back then we put them on police vehicles and they were used all over Salina,” Morton said. “They were deployed until July 2021.”

Morton said the department had maintenance issues with the two readers, costing the department time and resources, and they were retired.
