However, for fans hungry for more, there are a few notable TV shows and movies available to stream on Prime Video and Hulu after playing to chase this Nordic fix. Robert Eggers’ recent Viking epic is one such choice, and there’s also an ongoing anime series that’s more than worth investing in, as it interprets Norse lore.

The Northman (2022)

The Northman is a revenge story through and through, and there’s something admirable about a film to be fully aware of that and playing to its strengths. Even more alluring is that the film and its interpretation of the world weave in some ambiguous elements of mysticism. As expected, Skarsgård delivers an incredibly original performance, with Anya Taylor-Joy making a memorable impression as always in this second collaboration with Eggers.

Vikings (2013-2020)

A historical drama, this series is loosely based on real Scandinavian stories, particularly through its main character, Ragnar Lothbrok. It begins with Ragnar as a humble peasant who gradually rises to fame as a warrior, with the story taking the characters to England and beyond.

For fans of history, medieval Norse storytelling, and meaningful dramatic intrigue: viking is an immersive epic that spans six narratively satisfying seasons. The series has been particularly praised for giving the same importance to character writing as suspenseful action, something similarly themed films and shows occasionally don’t.

Vinland Saga (2020-)

On the anime side of things, Wit Studios masterful adaptation from writer/artist Makoto Yukimura Vinland saga Season 1 is a thoroughly compelling watch for its storytelling and intriguing cast of characters. This historical fiction anime follows young Thorfinn Karlsefni as he goes from bright boy to vengeful warrior after his father is murdered by Viking mercenary Askeladd.

To get revenge, he joins Askeladd’s band of mercenaries to gain the power to kill him in a duel. In addition to the engaging writing style, the score is beautiful, the atmosphere intriguing, and the story plays well with themes of redemption, letting go of the past, and living for the future.

Season 1 of Vinland saga is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and HIDIVE, with a second season set to premiere on January 10, 2023.

The Last Kingdom (2015-2022)

viking isn’t the only critically acclaimed Nordic TV series out there The Last Kingdom received a similarly strong response. The series wrapped up its 5th season this year, with constant praise for its impressive overall production value.

It begins by following Uhtred, a man raised by the Danish Viking band who captured him and killed his father, leading to the character developing an interesting internal conflict when he was eventually accepted as family. As in viking, The Last Kingdom was also well-received because of the focus on compellingly written characters as much as it did on gritty, gory action.

All five seasons of The Last Kingdom is available to stream now on Netflix, with a film sequel entitled Seven kings must die Premiered on the streamer in 2023 to wrap up the story.
