The Insta360 One RS action camera captures 360-degree and wide-angle shots for both 4K video at 60 fps and still images at 48 MP. It comes with an invisible selfie stick for third-person view. It’s waterproof and built to take a beating.

The Insta360 is one of the biggest challengers to GoPro’s dominance in the action camera market. It’s been around since 2015 and is known not only for its crisp traditional camera footage, but also for its innovative 360° view, which allows the user to capture angles that would otherwise require multiple cameras and a lot of time to edit.
There are six cameras in the Insta 360 range, and we’ve been testing the One RS for the past few months. The One RS is unique in that it’s two cameras in one – you can use the 4K Boost lens with its 0.5-inch 48MP image sensor, which shoots 4K footage at 60fps and a massive 48 -Captures MP stills, or you can do as we do and swap the Boost lens for the 360 lens.
The 360-degree lens captures everything in 5.7K and when you’re done, go to the Insta360 Studio desktop app or your phone app (we prefer the desktop app) and choose where the camera is at to record at a certain point in time.
Another cool feature of the Insta360 One RS is the invisible selfie stick, which we think also works like a ram mount. The camera’s dual-lens system doesn’t recognize the stick sitting directly underneath, effectively making it stand out in real time. The result is that your movie looks like someone else is filming, which is perfect for onboard recording when you have your mount mounted on the bike.
Quick edits are easy with the Insta360 mobile app. We’ve often had issues with other cameras on the market that don’t connect to phones via Wi-Fi, but that’s never been the case with the One RS. The camera connects every time we’ve asked it to, and since it records in 360 degrees, it can be in any aspect ratio you want from 1:1, 9:16, 16:9, 4:3 or 2.35 :1 and you can instantly trim footage for YouTube, Instagram Films, or any platform.
I’ve been using action cameras since I got my first Replay camera in 2012, with about 10 different GoPros in between. Without a doubt, the Insta360 One RS is my absolute favorite.
This is a near-perfect camera for motorcycling because I can do the same job with one camera as I used to with four. I have used it while riding at Lake Como in Italy and have ridden with me at Laguna Seca and Mosport in Canada. Incidentally, both of those races ended in massive falls (I know, I know), and incredibly, the camera came out almost entirely scratch-free – which is absolutely amazing.

I’m no genius when it comes to shooting footage, but I’ve gotten decent enough over the years to know which shots work and which don’t. This often results in pretty boring shots with a one-dimensional camera, but the One RS breathed a little new life into me. There are a number of angles I never thought I could capture and I do that regularly now.
I’ll admit that I hardly ever used the 4K Boost lens because I have other cameras that can do similar jobs and I want to keep the 360 lens.
One of the reasons I love this camera so much is the editing suite. The on-phone app is handy, but I do almost everything with the desktop app, which is superbly laid out and very easy to understand if you have even the slightest knowledge of editing software. There are some good YouTube tutorial videos for the app, and you can do cool effects like the mini planet feature that makes it look like you’re driving around the globe for a little bit. To be honest, the videos we produce here at Cycle News don’t need such a feature, but they’re a cool thing if you’re just shooting for fun.
If you’re in the market for an action camera, the extra few hundred dollars you’ll spend on a camera like the One RS is a very compelling argument over traditional one-dimensional cameras. CN
