The Canon EOS R6 Mk. II is the mid-tier upgrade we’ve all been waiting for – not film school | Episode Movies

Canon’s second-gen R6 offers a similar form factor with just enough new features to make it an appealing backup. But is being your primary enough?

Canon has officially released the Canon EOS R6 Mk. II and insiders say it’s a notable improvement over the original, with impressive additions that bring it closer to the R3 than the original R6.

Featuring a 24.2 CMOS image sensor with DIGIC X processor, the Canon R6 Mk. II features electronic shutter burst capture at 40 frames per second (mechanical 12 fps) and an expanded capture buffer to capture the action before it takes a moment to write to the two SD media card slots. However, the electronic burst mode drops to 12-bit color, while the mechanical option sticks to 14-bit color raw at 12 fps.

Advanced autofocus capabilities

The camera also features an improved second-generation Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system (DPAFII) that offers not just eye-lock autofocus, but full-range capturing of everything from trains, planes, and cars to animals like horses or zebras. There’s also an Automatic Scene Recognition option, which allows the photographer to decide if they want the camera to decide what to see. Users can also choose which eye to focus on in eye detection mode.

Canon has also added a detection-only AF mode that tracks autofocus even if the subject moves out of frame. This keeps the subject in focus, rather than having the camera focus on the background and chasing back to the subject when it comes back into the frame.

Video recording up to 6K

The new camera can record 6K RAW video internally, which can either be routed to an external recorder such as an Atomos Ninja V+ with ProRes RAW, or downsampled to 4K internally at 60 per second. This is available along with C-Log 3 (for increased dynamic range) and 10-bit 4:2:2 Slow motion at 120 fps in 1080p. The camera also supports HDR via PQ.

Other recording options include IPB, IPB Light, H.265 and H.264 MP4. Canon also added the option to set Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority in video mode instead of all automatic or all manual options, which are also still available. With so many shooters traveling alone, this is a nice addition to automate your workflow.

Limitations on long-form videos

When recording longer content, Canon eliminated the arbitrary 30-minute time limit before shutting down to keep the camera cool. This is a boon for the long-form interviewers who don’t want to stop to switch to a different shot, which can break the flow.

According to Canon, the R6 Mk. II can record over 40 minutes oversampled at 4K60p, or up to six hours at 4K30p.

Pre-recording is also available in buffers of three or five seconds, which stream the video through the buffer in standby mode, allowing users to start recording before hitting the record button when it’s activated. Canon has also added a one-touch button that allows users to switch between video and stills with a simple slide from one to the other, as well as a power lock button.

Other properties

Other features include enhanced In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) with up to 8 IS stops coupled with optical lens stabilization found on a Canon lens. There is also a multifunctional digital hot shoe that supports external XLR microphones, such as B. the Tascam CA-XLR2d with an adapter.

The camera also features a movable LCD touchscreen, which is standard on their cameras these days, and a 3.69 million dot electronic viewfinder with a 120 fps refresh rate. Kudos to Canon for respecting users enough to resist the urge to make them buy back accessories they already have in that regard.

Onboard tools also include a false color exposure indicator. While we haven’t reviewed every mirrorless camera on the market, the R6 Mk. II appears to be the first to feature such a feature. However, false color display is disabled when shooting in Video Assist mode and C-Log3. There’s also an HDR mode for moving subjects, which lets you shoot in HDR even when the subject is moving. Canon also added a focus breathing correction option.

The R6 Mk. II features upgraded Bluetooth Vs. 5 & 5GHz WiFi with high speed file sharing and file transfer when connected to a smartphone. For video content creators who rely on Camera to Cloud, this could be a huge benefit if Canon offers a firmware update to support it. Fuji and RED already offer native C2C with Frame.io integration, but we’ll have to wait and see if Canon follows suit.

Thoughts, price and availability

All in all, the EOS R6 Mk. II is a solid camera with some solid features that put the R6 below the R3. This makes it a nice secondary camera for professionals, without making other content creators feel like they’re missing out if it’s their only camera of choice.

However, the conventional wisdom is that if the developer already has the first-gen R6, there may not be enough here to justify an upgrade as this is only a mid-level update. A reference to the TikTok development cycle, if you will. If you’re looking to take it to the next level, it might be better to spend more money on the R3, but for those who want higher performance without breaking the bank, the R6 Mk.II packs enough great new features that to take this step.

The camera will be available in late November, just in time for the holiday shopping season, with your local shop already open for pre-orders.
