It’s been an interesting year for cinema. Superhero movies have been surpassed by a Tom Cruise throwback, while horror has garnered critical acclaim and commercial hits like X, Barbarian and Nope.

There were some surprise hits in the form of Indian Tegulu epic RRR and Everything Everywhere All at Once that made a multiverse better than Marvel managed in its big-budget efforts.

So the following – in alphabetical order – are the best films of the year; our Favorite Movies 2022which we will update as new gems are released.

Best Movie of the Year: The Banshees of Inisherin

Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin.

The Banshees of Inisherin brings together In Bruges writer-director Martin McDonagh with actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and the result is one of the best films of the year. Here’s what we said in our Fantastic Fest review: “The Banshees of Inisherin is definitely a playwright’s work, with the dialogue sometimes feeling overwritten. But there is beauty in the words, with phrases that spin in circles and conversations that hypnotically retreat in on themselves.

“Thanks to the eccentric characters and wide-ranging situations, the setting often feels a bit like a rugged island. But it doesn’t hurt to remember the comedy classic Father Ted.

“Banshees has a more serious story to tell, however, with the underlying message of how to cope with the slow passage of time to death and what makes a good life. This makes the film McDonagh’s most mature feature film to date and quite possibly his best.”

Best Movies of the Year: Barbarian

Georgina Groom in Barbarian, one of the best movies of 2022.20th century studios

Georgina Groom in TERRIFYING Barbarian.

We caught the brilliant Barbarian in an early preview during FrightFest, and this is an excerpt from Dexerto’s review of arguably the best horror film of 2022: “Barbarian is a film that defies expectations at every turn. Zach Cregger plays with his characters—and the audience, by the way—whenever he gets a chance, scratching them back and forth like a cat playing with a mouse.

“The film has a lot to tell about the decline of the city of Detroit and the toll it took on the people who lived there. And about the Airbnb phenomenon, where we live in someone else’s house and don’t know anything about what’s happening inside their walls.

“But social comments aside, Barbarian is pure, simple, audience-catching horror filled with surprises and shocks. The kind of film that grabs you early in the process, holds you for the duration, and then barely lets go as the credits roll.”

Best Movies of the Year: The Batman

Tim Burton has brought a dark Batman to the big screen. Christopher Nolan has made it even darker with his trilogy. And in 2022, Matt Reeves brought us The Batman, the darkest Dark Knight yet, and in the process created one of the best films of the year.

Robert Pattinson plays the title character, bringing a thoughtful intensity to the troubled billionaire crime fighter. Gotham has also never been so richly structured, giving us well-informed takes on the Riddler (Paul Dano), Penguin (Colin Farrell), and Catwoman (Selina Kyle). We even saw Batman as a detective once!

Best Movie of the Year: Brian and Charles

The humble British comedy Brain and Charles has stolen our collective hearts, as the Dexerto review explains: “While the genre changes and the tone shifts, Brian and Charles never lose sight of what it is: a film about how to find friendship in the most unexpected places.

“David Earl gives a deeply touching performance as Brian, who is somehow both sad and upbeat throughout the film. While Chris Heyward is good as Charles I think. He certainly makes a fine comedy foil for his friend. Their bond – and the bond that Brian is beginning to form with Hazel – is at the heart of the film. Ultimately, with Brian and Charles, it’s about making a connection and how those connections can give meaning to life. Like sometimes, we just need someone to help us cook cabbage or play a game of darts with us.”

Best Movies of the Year: Everything Everywhere at Once

Michelle Yeoh in Everything Everywhere All at Once, one of the best movies of the year.A24

Michelle Yeoh kicks ass in “All at once”.

Written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – known collectively as the Daniels – Everything Everywhere All at Once is a marvel of sound and vision and one of the best films of the year. The story is absurd and revolves around a laundromat owner who meets with the IRS, where she learns about and moves between parallel universes while battling a powerful being bent on destroying the multiverse.

The film combines pretty much every genre in existence, from action and comedy to romance, drama and horror, and capitalizes on all of Michelle Yeoh’s remarkable talents as the verse-jumper in question.

Best Movies of the Year: No

Daniel Kaluuya was reunited with Jordan Peele in Nope.

2022 was a brilliant year for genre films as this list proves. And new Master of Horror Jordan Peele was back with his third feature film, following critical and commercial successes Get Out and Us.

Thanks to Nope, he’s three on three, the sci-fi scarecrow that has grossed more than $170 million worldwide and an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer play siblings whose efforts to gather evidence of a UFO have chilling and increasingly terrifying results.

Best Movies of the Year: Prey

Amber Midthunder in one of the best movies of 2022, Prey.20th century studios

Amber Midthunder in Predator prequel Prey.

We absolutely loved the Predator prequel, and this is what we said of the action-horror sci-fi flick in the Dexerto review: “Predator remains the only film that has moviegoers believing that Arnold Schwarzenegger is afraid of everything could, but Midthunder is an exceptional foil for the wild ways of the hunter. While others scream and shoot, causing damage but opening up (literally), she’s a believable, impressive one; hide but never cower.

“Most of the film rests on their shoulders – along with Cocos – and they never buckle. It would be wonderful to see her again – on the other hand I wouldn’t say no to Danny Glover who is embroiled in another drug war fueled by a heat wave. Gnarly, exciting, and original, Prey is the best film in the franchise since the original. Let’s put it this way: Predator is back.”

Best Movies of the Year: RRR

Indian Telugu language epic RRR is one of the best movies of 2022.variance movies

RRR is an epic full of dance and action.

This Telugu language EPIC is the most expensive Indian film of all time and has broken box office records worldwide. That’s because the entire $72 million budget is on screen while director SS Rajamouli – working from a screenplay he co-wrote with V. Vijayendra Parasad – shoots some of the best action films of the year .

The story revolves around two true revolutionaries – Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (NT Rama Rao Jr.) – and follows their struggles with the British Raj. The title stands for “Rise, Roar and Revolt,” which all happens during RRR’s incredible 182 minutes.

Best Movies of the Year: Top Gun Maverick

Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connolly in one of the best movies of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick.Paramount Pictures

Whisper it – the original Top Gun isn’t a great movie, both the plot and the characters are razor-thin, and the movie’s success is largely due to Tom Cruise’s charisma and some amazing visuals. Top Gun Maverick – skyrocketing some 36 years later – fixes those issues and is better in every way, shape and form.

Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their roles, the latter movingly. Talents such as Miles Teller, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Connolly join the cast and raise the bar in the process. While director Joseph Kosinski blasts everything out of the aviation sequences, it has resulted in the highest-grossing film of 2022 to date and the biggest of Cruise’s career.
