“07:15 – Blackbird”, “Kapr Code” among winners at Ji.hlava Film Festival – Yahoo Entertainment | Episode Movies

The power of sound and the effects of war dominated the 26th Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival Awards, with the French documentary “07:15 – Blackbird” taking home both the Grand Prize and the Camera Award.

The story of a young girl trying to identify the call of a mysterious bird, directed by Judith Auffray and filmed by Mario Valero, the 30-minute documentary’s fairytale-like poetics, which balance natural wonders and technology, won over the opus Bonus Jury. The jury said the film “pulls us back into the mysteries of our existence”.

More of diversity

After the festival focused on war films and a strong presence of Ukrainian filmmakers and their work, the closing gala was interrupted to honor the fallen in Ukraine when a choir took the stage to sing the traditional anthem “The Duckling Swims”. .

The Croatian documentary “Deserters”, a study by Damir Markovina on letters from young Balkan War resistance fighters, won the Central and Eastern Europe prize and awards for sound design, while “Over Our Hills”, a tongue-in-cheek look at Swiss conscripts by Mateo Ybarra , won the Opus Bonum edition prize for his skillful montages of archival material.

Fanie Pelletier’s look at adolescent Quebec girls struggling with identity crises and social media, Bloom won the Documentary Debut Award, while Javier Codesal’s Spanish documentary Greater Gospel was recognized for its original approach chronicling a retirement home for LGTBIQ+ resident.

The Czech Joy Prize, the winner of the national competition, went to Lucie Králová’s documentary opera Kapr Code for its unconventional approach to honoring composer Jan Kapr’s life’s work.

The robust Czech competition section also awarded a special mention to The Visitors, Veronika Lišková’s document about a social anthropologist’s efforts to study a community facing climate crises in a Norwegian archipelago, while the Czech Editors’ Prize went to Jan Bušta’s view of the Jim from 1978 went Jones cult mass suicide in Guyana, “aBCDeFGHi-JONESTOWN”.

The intricate reconstruction of the tragedy, based on audio recordings and edited by Šimon Špidla, impressed the judges with its approach to the tragedy in which hundreds of Jones supporters were forced to drink poison.

The Czech Film Award went to Petr Michal’s tribute to Czech literary translator Anna Karenina, Found by the One She Seeks, filmed by Jakub Vrbík.

Pioneering Slovak documentary filmmaker Dušan Hanák was also hailed for his decades of luminous work, which festival officials say “combined politeness with experimentation.”

The awards ceremony, held at the DKO cultural center in the central Czech city, capped a week of talks and debates that focused on everything from the ethics of filmmaking and indie distribution to document mentoring programs and honors for inspiring documentary filmmakers from the Philippines, Azerbaijan and beyond.
