Sony launched the first edition of its online Future Filmmaker Awards competition in late July and just announced the names of the 2023 judges. The three categories – Filmmaker, Student Filmmaker and Future Format – will be judged by Justin Chadwick, Nicole Brown, Jeremy Barber and Sir Roger Deakins! To continue supporting creators worldwide, Sony has launched the Future Filmmaker Awards competition. This online competition rewards filmmakers in six categories across three competitions.
Sony Future Filmmaker Awards – general rules
A new online short film competition, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards offer an exceptional opportunity for filmmakers and content creators to showcase their work and perhaps be one of the 30 winners. If you are interested in participating, you can do so by submitting your film(s) to for free Tuesday, December 13, 2022. In fact, each entrant can submit to more than one category and contest.
There are three competitions in total: Filmmaker, Student Filmmaker and Future Format. In addition, there are three categories in the filmmaker competition and two categories in the student filmmaker competition.
A shortlist of up to five entrants per category and one winner will be selected by the panel of judges and announced on the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards website. In short, no fewer than 30 filmmakers are shortlisted!
Sony has just announced the jury for the first edition. You will have the opportunity to screen your short film with Justin Chadwick, Nicole Brown, Jeremy Barber and Sir Roger Deakins, one of the most respected cinematographers of our time.
The Filmmaker competition is aimed at independent filmmakers and creatives worldwide. There are three categories: fiction, non-fiction, and environmental.
Each filmmaker contest entry must be between 5 and 20 minutes long and can be shot on any device. In addition, your film must have been made in 2021 or 2022 and be in English or contain English subtitles.
Competition for student filmmakers
The Student Filmmaker competition rewards talent that will soon shape the industry. All participants are required to study a film course at a registered institution worldwide at the graduate or graduate level.
The student filmmaker competition has two categories: fiction and non-fiction. Shortlisted institutions are selected by continent to ensure a diverse array of global talent.
Each Student Filmmaker Contest entry must be between 5 and 20 minutes long and can be shot on any device. In addition, your film must have been made in 2021 or 2022 and be in English or contain English subtitles.
Future Format Contest
Last but not least, the Future Format competition has only one category with a technical briefing: shoot your film on a smartphone. Your entry must be between 2 and 5 minutes, shot in English or with English subtitles, shot between 2021 and 2022 and recorded on a smartphone.
Sony Future Filmmaker Awards – Awards
Now let’s get to the juicy part: prizes! First, all 30 shortlisted filmmakers will receive a trip to Los Angeles to attend the awards ceremony and two-day workshop program at the Sony Pictures studio.
The winners of the Filmmaker competition will receive a cash prize of US$5,000, a Sony FX9 cinema camera with a full-frame FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G cinematic lens with power zoom, a certificate and a trophy.
The student filmmaker winners can look forward to a Sony FX6 cinema camera, a zoom lens FE 24-105 mm F/4 G OSS, a certificate and a trophy.
Finally, the Future Format winner will receive a cash prize of US$2,500, Sony digital imaging equipment, a certificate and a trophy.
As previously mentioned, the competition will end on December 13, 2022. The winners will be announced during the ceremony on February 22, 2023. The two-day workshop will take place on February 23 and 24, 2023.
